1921 census

So it's ok to watch people on cctv and take dna and monitor phone calls at police or county council request. But ordinary people can't be trusted to view 1921 census and after. Due to disclosure. ie it's ok for goverment to have information about us. But we can't be trusted.

Perhaps it is time to pressure parliament to repeal the 1920 census act and bring the census in to line with parliament and make it public after 30yrs or 50yrs at the most considering that you have claimed that the 100yr year ruling was not statutory...just an adopted piece of Victorian moral fancy I have already started to lobby for the 30yr ruling on census records and an end to the 80yr ruling on military record, considering that America can see their census after 75yrs.

I believe firmly that we should now release all future census returns after 50 years, I think in that time it is more than reasonable given new rules in parliament about many things these days changing. Why bother with a thing called the Freedom of Information Act, which allows quite a bit of sensitive material to be released - yet the 1921 information is not massively going to hurt anyone if it was released earlier than the due date of 2022. I am happy to support anyone lobbying for it to be released early. Genealogy is growing more and more these days and people only wish to use it out of respect to their family not to create some public display for all and sundry I'm sure. Come on Conservative government, you say we voted for you as it was time for change. Well change the census release ruling - it's time to change.

I agree with all the points made in the previous messages. I feel that a 75yr rule or 50 yr rule would be more sensible. I am trying to find out some information about my father's family for him before he dies. He is already 90years of age so don't imagine he will be with us in the year 2022!!!
What we need is some good old fashioned sense not hanging on to old rules for the sake of it!

I agree. Most of the people in families I know don't have relatives still living that were born around the 1921 - 1927 time. Please consider releasing it earlier than 2022.

Although the 1921 census was taken after the 1920 Census Act, I understand that there is nothing "Written in Stone" stating that it must be 100 years before a census can be released to the general public. If anything the Freedom of Information Act is more applicable which would mean that a census can be released after 30 years. Maybe a lawyer who has an interest in Genealogy may like to look into this on behalf of all the UK Genealogists who need more up to date information now.

I think we should have access. If you don't want to know, don't look. If you find something an elderly relative would find upsetting, don't tell them. Simple.

With the growth of interest in geneaology what a golden egg the 2021 census is! Come on you guys, make money from it!!! We will pay to see it won't we?.

Please release the 1921 Census early....

The 1921 Census? That means everyone counted would be at least 90 years old in 2011.
If anyone alive even remembers participating in the 1921 census, I'll eat my hat ... with my head in it.!!!

I'm in total agreement with all the comments made here. I can't really go too much further back and realy need some answers for some of the research I have done so far. I would happily pay for the information the 1921 census will provide.

C'mon government - give us the information!!

I agree with previous posts regarding the immediate release of the 1921 census. This would be of considerable help to geneaologists. Looking at it realistically it is the first census after both the great war and the "Spanish" flu epidemic. Furthermore the next available census will not, under the 100 year "rule" be released until 2052, long after many people reading this will be dead and buried.

i also agree with previous posts. as i am the youngest of a family of nine, now down to seven due to berevement it is highly likely that my elder family members will all be gone without ever knowing the information contained in the 1921 census that could solve once and
for all a puzzle concerning the parentage of an ancester which has
caused great heartache and could finally be given closure and
peace of mind to my siblings before its to late.

I agree, please bring the 1921 census in line with other Government papers, ie to be released now, it being more than 50 years old. I am trying to find details of my mother who was born in 1916 and who is no longer with us. I shall be in mid-70s in 2022 and who knows if I shall be able to access the 1921 census. All the technology will probably be beyond me by then.

I agree with all the previous messages. On the ancestry site you can search marriages births and deaths and find a lot of information that is relevant today so it is ludicrous to keep the census' hidden for ioo years. If people are afraid of their privacy being invaded I would suggest 50 or 60yrs at the most should be applied

I completely agree with a ruling of 50 years for privacy. Since 1911 we have had 2 World Wars, therefore a lot of families have gaps which they would like to fill. My son is in the Army as was my Grand-father and would love to find out more about our family and have it documented before its too late. Why can we find out about how much our neighbours paid for their house last year but cannot find out about great aunts and uncles??

I will also sign a petition to reduce the time from 100 years to 50 years,

I think its about time that the 1921 & 1931 census' should be transcribed online asap for England & Wales its our right and I dont buy the fact that its privacy etc.. the Amercans havve done it and for god sake even the Irish !

I may be dead by 2022!!

we need a petition to get it going !!!

I had no idea that the 1921 Census information was not open to the public. This is a ridiculous, unfair and anti-freedom of information. How does one go about getting this changed

I think it is pointless to hide this information, my Grand-mother was born in 1920 and there was a sensitive piece of information but guess what the census would never have revealed it but the birth indexes did. I think if you don't want to then reveal it that is fine as it was I spoke with my nana and she was almost relieved to talk about it, I think it is a case by case instance.

Also, we immigrated to Australia and truly the most helpful information is in the census records as it confirms the birth and death records and gives siblings etc.

I have a relative who i just cannot sort out from yorkshire between 1901 and 11 but since she was born in 1879 and she was alive in the 40's she should be on the 1921 census and will now be most definatly dead so anyone who is still alive now even if they were born in 1921 would be 90 or above and so would they realy be so distressed about any extra info coming out .I do seriously wonder. Also my mother died many years ago at the age of 60 long before i , also at the age of 60 am doing the family history without any real family info to fall back on you have no idea how difficult from 1900 to the present is to track down .
