Trying to research Garlands in the Lancashire area (?Ashton district). My father was Adrian Garland Smith who died in 1968. His mothers surname was Garland and she died in 1962. She was a teacher of botany. Very vague I know but worth a try!

The only death I can see in 1968 is in the March quarter for Adrian G Smith aged 42, so born 1926.
The birth that matches is this

Adrian Garland Smith
March quarter
Year 1926
District Ashton
Vol 8d

If you get this certificate from the GRO (General Register Office) it will give his parents' names and you should be able to trace the marriage, and go back from there with the 1911 and 1901 census, getting certificates as needed.
